Diffusers and the air in your home: what the research actually says

The claim I used to repeat

An older version of this page said that diffusers act as natural air purifiers, dispersing antimicrobial oils that combat airborne pathogens. I wrote that because it is what everyone writes. It is on packaging, in brochures, in a thousand blog posts.

I have since read the research, and it does not support it. So the sentence is gone, and this page explains what the evidence actually shows instead.

What the literature review found

The most useful single source I have found is a critical literature review published in Environmental Science and Pollution Research in 2020 by Angulo Milhem, Verriele, Nicolas and Thevenet. It asks the question directly: does the widespread use of essential-oil-based products improve indoor air quality?

Its findings, as the authors state them:

That is not a fringe position or a hostile reading. It is the stated conclusion of a peer-reviewed review of the field.

The chemistry, in plain language

Essential oils are largely terpenes. Terpenes are volatile — that is why you can smell them across a room — and they are chemically reactive.

Indoor air already contains oxidants. Ozone drifts in from outside, and more is produced indoors by some appliances. When terpenes meet ozone, they react. The products of that reaction include formaldehyde and very fine particles known as secondary organic aerosols.

So the sequence is not “oil goes into air, air becomes cleaner”. It is closer to “oil goes into air, oil reacts with what is already there, and the result includes things you would not choose to add.”

Nothing about this makes essential oils uniquely bad. Cooking, candles, cleaning products and furniture all put reactive compounds into indoor air. The point is narrower: a diffuser adds to the load. It does not subtract from it.

What this does and does not mean

It does not mean diffusing is dangerous. The review is about air quality, not about acute harm to healthy adults in ordinary use. It is a reason for moderation and ventilation, not for alarm.

It does not mean oils are worthless. A diffuser makes a room smell the way you want it to smell. That is a real thing to want, and it is worth having. It is just not air purification.

It does mean the purifying claim should go. If a product genuinely cleaned air, that would be measurable. The measurements point the other way.

And it means ventilation is not optional. If diffusing adds reactive compounds to a room, then air exchange is the thing that removes them. Opening a window is not undoing your diffuser. It is the other half of using it sensibly.

Are ultrasonic diffusers worse than reed diffusers?

They behave differently. An ultrasonic or nebulising device produces fine droplets that travel and then settle on surfaces; a passive diffuser mostly evaporates. For indoor air chemistry the relevant factor is how much material you put into the air over how long, which the active devices make easy to overdo.

Does this apply to candles too?

Scented candles add combustion products on top of fragrance compounds, so they are generally considered a larger indoor air burden, not a smaller one. That was not the subject of the review I have cited, so I am flagging it as widely held rather than as something I have verified here.

Is an air purifier better?

An air purifier and a diffuser do opposite things: one removes material from the air, the other adds it. If your goal is cleaner air, a diffuser is the wrong tool, and ventilation is usually the cheapest one.

So should I stop diffusing?

That is your call and I am not going to pretend it is mine. What I would say: diffuse because you like how it smells, keep sessions short, open a window, and do not expect it to do anything to germs.
