Wild Orange

doTERRA Wild Orange essential oil 15 ml bottle
Wild Orange is cold pressed from the peel rather than distilled, which is what keeps its aroma so immediately recognisable — bright, sweet and energising. It is one of doTERRA’s best sellers. One thing worth knowing before you reach for it in the kitchen: in Europe Wild Orange is labelled for topical and aromatic use only, not for food. That differs from American material you may come across online.

Key characteristics

  • Cold pressed from the peel of Citrus sinensis.
  • High in monoterpenes.
  • Soothing qualities for the skin, which makes it a pleasant addition to beauty products.
  • Energising aroma.
  • Topical and aromatic use only in Europe — not labelled for food.

Ingredients

Citrus aurantium dulcis (Orange) Peel Oil, Limonene*, Pinene*, Linalool*, Citral*, Terpineol*, Terpinolene*, Carvone*, Beta-Caryophyllene*, Geraniol*, Geranyl Acetate*, Citronellol*, Alpha-Terpinene*, Methyl Salicylate*, Cinnamal*, Eugenol* (*naturally occurring oil compounds)

Directions for use

For massage, mix 5 drops with 10 ml carrier oil. For bath, mix 5 drops with 5 ml carrier oil. For perfuming, mix 1 drop to 10 drops carrier oil. For topical use only.

Cautions

Possible skin sensitivity. Keep out of reach of children. Consult your doctor if pregnant or in treatment. Avoid eyes, inner ears and sensitive areas. Avoid sunlight or UV rays for at least 12 hours after applying. Never apply undiluted to the skin.

What it smells like

Sweet, round, immediately recognisable — the friendliest smell in the range and the one nobody objects to. Cold-pressed from the peel, so it smells like the fruit in a bowl rather than like orange squash.

Three things to actually do with it

1. The default diffuser blend

Two drops with two of lavender. If a household has one blend it uses more than any other, it is usually this one. Three drops of wild orange on its own works too, and is the cheapest way to make a room feel aired.

2. A morning body oil at 1 %

Three drops in 10 ml of carrier — for the evening or for covered skin. See the sun note below before it goes anywhere the light reaches.

3. On a cloth in the kitchen bin or the vacuum filter

Two drops. It lasts about a week and costs almost nothing.

What it blends with

Everything. Frankincense gives it depth, peppermint makes it sharp and festive, cinnamon bark in December. It is the oil to reach for when a blend smells good but severe.

Getting the amount right

Flagged as photosensitising in the European range. Keep treated skin out of direct sun and away from sunbeds for twelve hours. This is the reason to use it in an evening oil rather than a morning one. Diffusing is unaffected.

In the European range this bottle is not labelled as a food flavouring — which surprises people, because American recipes use wild orange in baking constantly. The American label and the European one are not the same document, and the one that governs is the one on your bottle.

On skin, 1–2 % on the body, 0.5 % on the face if at all. Full safety notes.

Questions people ask

An American recipe says to put it in a cake. Can I?

Not from this bottle. Food use depends on the labelling of the product you actually own, and in the European range this one is not labelled for it.

Is it the same as sweet orange?

Wild orange is doTERRA’s name for the oil; the botanical name on the label tells you the species. Different producers name the same species differently.

Why does it go off so fast?

All cold-pressed citrus oils oxidise quickly — a year or two after opening. Buy the size you will actually use.
