Essential oils and cats: the enzyme your cat does not have

This is an article about oils I sell, explaining why several of them should not be anywhere near your cat. I would rather write that than have someone find out the hard way.
Why cats are a special case
Cats are not simply smaller than us. They are missing a piece of liver machinery.
Most mammals clear a wide range of foreign compounds by attaching a sugar to them, which makes them water-soluble and easy to excrete. The enzyme that does this is glucuronyl transferase. Cats are deficient in it. The Merck Veterinary Manual states this plainly and draws the consequence: cats are very sensitive to phenols and phenolic compounds, which some essential oils contain in quantity.
So the same dose that a person shrugs off, and that a dog handles less well, can sit in a cat and keep working. This is not a matter of a cat being fussy about smells. It is a metabolic gap.
There is a second problem that has nothing to do with the liver. Cats groom. Anything that settles on the coat gets swallowed. A cat cannot decide to leave it there.
The oils veterinary toxicology names
These are the oils named in the Merck Veterinary Manual entry on essential oil toxicoses in animals. I have grouped them the way that source groups them.
Associated with liver damage
Birch tar, cassia bark, cinnamon, pennyroyal, and tea tree (melaleuca) — which the manual notes is the most commonly reported of the group.
Tea tree deserves a sentence of its own, because it is the oil people reach for casually. It is in cleaning sprays, it gets dabbed on things, it has a reputation as the harmless practical one. In cats it is the essential oil most often behind a reported poisoning.
Associated with seizures
Birch, cedar, eucalyptus, hyssop, pennyroyal, sage, wintergreen and wormwood.
Aspirin-like toxicity
Wintergreen and birch contain high levels of methyl salicylate — chemically close to aspirin, and cats are poor at handling salicylates.
Read those three lists together and a pattern appears: several of them are ordinary household oils. Eucalyptus and cinnamon are not exotic. They are in winter blends.
The diffuser problem nobody mentions
Most advice about oils and pets is about not putting oil on the animal. That is the easy part. The part that gets missed is the diffuser, and the manual is specific about it.
It distinguishes two kinds of device. A passive diffuser — a reed, a warmer, evaporation — puts vapour into the air and can cause respiratory irritation. An active diffuser — a nebuliser or an ultrasonic unit — produces microdroplets, and those droplets do not stay in the air. They settle. On the floor, on the sofa, on the cat.
Which brings the exposure back round to grooming. The route is not really inhalation. It is: diffuse, settle, groom, swallow.
This is why “I only diffuse, I never put it on her” is not the reassurance it sounds like. It is also why a closed room with a cat who cannot leave is a worse setup than an open-plan space the cat can walk out of.
What poisoning looks like
The manual lists, for ingestion or skin exposure: vomiting, lethargy, drooling, ataxia — an unsteady, drunken walk — and loss of appetite. In more serious cases: tremors, low blood pressure, gastrointestinal ulcers, seizures, paralysis of the hind limbs, and organ failure.
For inhalation: watering eyes, a runny nose, nausea, drooling, vomiting, laboured or rapid breathing, coughing or wheezing.
If you see these, this article stops being useful. Call a vet or a poison line. Take the bottle with you so somebody can read the label. Do not try to make the animal sick — with an oil, aspiration into the lungs is one of the real dangers, and vomiting makes that more likely, not less.
Dogs are not small cats, but they are not immune
Dogs have the enzyme cats lack, so the same exposure is generally less dangerous for them. Less dangerous is not safe. Dogs are still reported with essential oil poisoning, and the seizure-associated oils are on the list for dogs too.
A dog also has an advantage a cat often does not: a dog can usually get out of the room. Whether it can depends on whether the door is open.
What I do in a home with animals
This is practice, not a rule handed down from anywhere:
- Nothing from the lists above gets diffused in a room a cat uses. Not diluted, not briefly. There are plenty of other oils.
- The door stays open. An animal that can walk away will.
- Short and ventilated. Twenty minutes with a window open, not an afternoon in a sealed room.
- Nothing goes on an animal. Not a drop, not on the collar, not in the bedding. If an animal has a problem, that is a veterinary question.
- Bottles live in a cupboard. A knocked-over bottle on a hard floor is a cat walking through neat oil and then licking its paws.
- Spills get cleaned properly, not wiped and forgotten.

Common questions
Is there a list of oils that are safe for cats?
I am not going to give you one, because I have not found a source I trust enough to put my name to. Absence from a toxicity list is not evidence of safety — it often just means nobody has studied it. What I can tell you is which oils appear in veterinary toxicology reports, and that is what this page does.
What about “pet-safe” blends sold for animals?
Judge them on their ingredient list and their evidence, not on the words on the front. If a blend contains something from the lists above, the label does not change the chemistry.
My cat has been in the room while I diffused lavender for years and is fine.
That is genuinely useful information about your cat, and I am glad. It is not information about cats. Individual animals differ, doses differ, and rooms differ. The point of the lists above is not that every exposure causes harm — it is that when harm is reported, these are the oils that keep appearing.
Are birds and small animals affected too?
Birds have famously sensitive respiratory systems and are generally considered at higher risk from airborne substances. I have not verified a specific source on birds and essential oils, so I will not pretend otherwise — ask an avian vet.
