Choosing a starter kit
doTERRA sells kits because buying six oils at once is cheaper than buying six oils one at a time, and because a beginner given a sensible six is more likely to use them than a beginner given a catalogue. The question is which six — and whether a kit is the right way in at all.
First: do you need a kit?
No. You can buy a single bottle at the retail price with no account and no commitment. A kit makes sense when two things are true at once: you already know you will use more than two or three oils, and you would rather not decide twenty times.
If neither is true yet, buy Lavender, a bottle of carrier oil and a diffuser, and see whether you reach for them. That is a smaller mistake than a kit you do not open.
What a kit actually is
Two things bundled: the products, and — in the enrolment kits — the account that gives you the wholesale price on everything afterwards. That second half is the part people miss. How the two prices work is set out here.

Built around a routine rather than a shelf. Suits someone who wants a defined daily use rather than a collection to explore.

Pre-diluted roll-ons. The practical argument for it is that the dilution decision is already made, which is where most mistakes with children happen.

A specific set for a specific technique. Not a general starting point.
How to choose in three questions
- What will you actually do with them? Diffuse in the evening, put something on skin, cook, clean. Each answer points at a different set — and cooking narrows it sharply, because only twenty-four of the seventy-eight are labelled for food here.
- Is there a child in the house? Then pre-diluted roll-ons are worth more than an extra bottle of something concentrated.
- Do you want the wholesale price afterwards? If yes, an enrolment kit is the cheaper route into the account. If you are not sure, buy at retail first; the account will still be there.
What no kit contains and everyone needs
- A carrier oil. Fractionated coconut is the default. Undiluted oil on skin is the most common beginner mistake and the most avoidable.
- A diffuser with a timer. Thirty minutes on, thirty off, beats running it all evening.
- Ten minutes with the safety page. Dilution, sun, children, pets, storage.
