Testing essential oil purity at home: why none of it works

The water test does not test what you think

The most repeated home test: put a drop in a glass of water. If it floats and does not dissolve, the oil is pure. If it clouds the water, it has been cut with something.

The problem is what the test actually measures. It measures whether the liquid mixes with water. Essential oils do not. Neither does a cheap vegetable oil. Neither does a synthetic aroma chemical. Every substance anyone would realistically use to adulterate an essential oil fails to dissolve in water, exactly as the genuine oil does.

A test that gives the same result for the thing you are looking for and the thing you are worried about is not a test. It is a ritual.

The paper test has the same problem in reverse

The second most repeated: a drop on paper. If it leaves a greasy ring, it has been diluted with a carrier oil.

Some genuine essential oils leave a ring. Sandalwood, vetiver, patchouli and myrrh are heavy in low-volatility molecules; they do not evaporate cleanly, and they mark paper. So the test fails honest oils.

It also passes dishonest ones. An oil adulterated with a cheap synthetic that evaporates well will leave no ring at all, and will pass.

„Therapeutic grade“ is not a certification

This is the one that matters most, and I say it as someone who sells doTERRA.

There is no government body, in Europe or elsewhere, that issues essential oils a grade. No regulator publishes a scale with „therapeutic“ at the top. When a company uses a phrase of that kind — and doTERRA’s CPTG is one such phrase — it is describing that company’s own internal quality programme, protected as a trademark. That is not the same thing as an authority testing the oil and awarding it a class.

A company’s quality programme can be perfectly serious. Many are. But a trademark is a company saying something about itself, and it is worth knowing which of the two you are reading.

What a real standard looks like

Standards for essential oils do exist. They are just less exciting than a grade, and they are per-oil rather than per-brand.

ISO 3515 is the international standard for lavender oil, written by ISO Technical Committee 54, whose entire remit is essential oils. It does not say „good“ or „therapeutic“. It says what a lavender oil must physically be, with numbers:

Notice that the standard specifies different ranges for French, Bulgarian and Australian material. There is no single correct lavender. There is a defensible range for a given origin, which is a much more honest way to describe a plant.

What GC-MS can and cannot settle

Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry separates an oil into its components and measures how much of each is present. Against a standard like ISO 3515, that is genuinely useful: it can show that an oil sold as lavender has a plausible lavender composition, or that it does not.

Two limits are worth understanding. A chromatogram shows which molecules are present, not where they came from; a molecule synthesised in a factory and the same molecule from a plant look the same. And a report published on a website as an example is not a report on the bottle in your hand — composition varies by harvest, and batch numbers exist for a reason.

What to look at instead

In Europe, the things that actually carry information are unglamorous and printed on the product.

None of that is as satisfying as a drop in a glass of water. It is, however, information.

Common questions

So how do I know my oil is pure?

At home, with certainty, you do not. What you can do is buy from a seller who publishes a product sheet for your market, names the botanical species, prints a batch number, and has an EU responsible person. That is not proof of purity; it is traceability, which is the part that can actually be checked.

Is a GC-MS report worthless then?

No — it is useful and it is more than most sellers publish. Just read it for what it is: the composition of one batch, against a standard, interpreted by someone who knows the standard.

Does „100% pure“ on a label mean anything?

It means the seller has said it. It is not issued or verified by a regulator. Read it as a claim, and look for the traceable things listed above.

What about the freezer test, or the smell test?

Freezing tells you about a mixture’s physical behaviour, not its authenticity. A trained nose genuinely is a useful instrument — people who buy oils professionally rely on it — but it takes years to train, and it is not what most of us are doing when we sniff a bottle in a kitchen.
